Music video analysis: Love Will Tear us Apart

      Love will tear us apart

Background information: "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a song by English rock band Joy Division, released in June 1980. The lyrics were inspired by lead singer Ian Curtis' struggles with mental illness. Curtis later committed suicide and the song was released a month after. The song is 3:18 and depicts Curtis' troubled relationships with his wife, saying that they will tear each other apart as long as they love each other. The song also makes suggestions about his struggles with epilepsy, which he was diagnosed with in 1979, and the stress of keeping a day job while also worrying about his music career.

The music video begins in a rather dark setting, with Joy Division playing their instruments in a dark room. Here the portrayal is clearly related to the emotions, that love is tearing them apart. At the start of the video, the door that opens and then shuts is carved with Ian Curtis' name. It was reported that this was the beginning of an abusive message carved into the door.

The songs deep voices and dark settings clearly symbolise mental illness and depression. This can suggest the struggles that relationships can hold, no matter how much you love them. The message of the video links to how the lead singer, Ian Curtis, sadly committed suicide. This clearly shows how all the dullness in the video was not done for entertainment purposes, bu
t instead to portray reality.
